What Is Pet Acupuncture?

Acupuncture, rooted in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), was originally believed to correct energy imbalances. Today, it is understood to cause physiological and chemical changes in your pet’s body, aiding in their healing process. Acupuncture serves as an alternative or complementary therapy in situations where:

  • Your pet cannot take certain medications.
  • Medications are not fully effective.
  • Your pet is not a good candidate for surgery or other medical treatments.

How Does Pet Acupuncture Work?

During acupuncture, a veterinarian inserts thin, sterile needles into specific points on your pet’s body where nerves, blood vessels, and fascia converge. These needles enhance blood circulation and stimulate the nervous system, which helps to decrease pain and reduce inflammation. Treatment sessions typically last between 20 and 45 minutes, with the number of sessions depending on your pet’s condition. While some pets may experience immediate results, those with chronic conditions might require a week or two of treatment to see noticeable improvements.

Is Acupuncture Painful for My Pet?

Acupuncture is virtually pain-free, with most pets feeling little to no discomfort due to the extremely fine needles used—almost as fine as a strand of hair. Many pets find the treatment so relaxing that they fall asleep during the session. Sedation is rarely needed.

What Are the Benefits of Pet Acupuncture?

Acupuncture improves blood flow, helps reduce waste in the body, and supports organ function. It also relaxes muscles at the needle insertion sites and throughout the body, providing both local and general pain relief. With no side effects, acupuncture is an ideal treatment for many pets, especially seniors and those in poor health.
