Telemedicine Consults

Thank you for considering Westgate Pet Clinic’s telemedicine consult service.  We are using the telemedicine platform Airvet.

Airvet Logo

Airvet offers two options for consultation.

1.) First Available Vet: This can be used for urgent matters after hours and will connect you with the first available veterinarian.  The on-call veterinarian is not a Westgate Pet Clinic veterinarian and can give general advice only. (For example, if you need to go to the emergency clinic after hours).
2.) My Vet: This can be used for non-urgent matters and the veterinarian will call or message you as soon as they’re available.  Dr. Debra Reed is managing all of our telemedicine calls right now. Dr. Reed is available Monday-Friday, and appointments are typically scheduled within 24 hours of a telemedicine request being received.  If you have an urgent concern with your pet during business hours, please call the clinic at 612-925-1121 to schedule an in-person appointment for your pet or contact one of the local emergency clinics.

You must be with your pet during the telemedicine call

Telemedicine pricing: $50 per call.  Post-operative consults are not associated with a fee, however, you will still need to input your credit card information to set up an account.  Your card will not be charged for post-operative rechecks.  If medications are prescribed during the call, they can be picked up at the clinic.

To be eligible for a telemedicine consult, you must have a valid client-patient-veterinary relationship.  This typically means that your pet has been seen at the clinic within the past 12 months. However, the Board of Veterinary Medicine is temporarily extending this to patients that have been seen at the clinic within the past 18 months.  This new definition is in effect until January 1st, 2021.

Conditions in which a telemedicine consult might be considered are:
- Chronic skin conditions that your pet has been seen for in the past
- Dogs only: Coughing or sneezing, but good energy and appetite  For cats, asthma or other serious heart and lung conditions can cause coughing.  Coughing cats require a chest x-ray and should be seen at a veterinary clinic.
- Vomiting one or two times, but still eating and good energy.
- Diarrhea, but still eating and good energy.  (Note, we may request that you drop off a stool sample).
- Chronic problems such as lameness and arthritis pain
- Recheck appointments in which your doctor feels like a telemedicine consult is a good option
